Search is good at two things: finding known items and revealing related items. It is not good at inference. When an agent uses search, it should be to locate a small number of modules with clear metadata.

That means you need explicit links, stable identifiers, and schemas that expose dependencies. Without those, reasoning collapses into guesswork.

The danger of search-only systems

  • Stable identifiers that agents can follow.

The handoff between search and reasoning

Search finds candidates. Reasoning determines which candidates actually matter. For high-impact workflows, define a short list of trusted sources. For exploratory workflows, allow broader search but require more validation.
